About Zebra Technologies
Zebra Technologies is a global leader in barcode printing, RFID technology, asset tracking, and data capture solutions. Its Preston facility has an annual electricity consumption of more than 1.2 GWh, making it an ideal site for a large-scale commercial solar PV installation.
With energy prices continuing to rise, Zebra wanted to invest in a renewable energy solution that would significantly reduce reliance on grid electricity while making the best possible use of the available roof space.
The Challenge
Installing a large commercial solar system required careful planning before work could begin.
NSI Energy carried out detailed structural surveys to confirm the roof could safely support the proposed array, alongside roof condition inspections and electrical assessments to ensure the existing infrastructure could accommodate the new generation capacity.
The team also secured a Grid Connection Agreement from the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO), allowing the system to export surplus electricity back to the grid. Minor roof coating repairs were completed before installation to ensure the roof was ready for long-term performance.
Our Solution
Using advanced solar modelling software, NSI Energy designed a bespoke rooftop solar PV system that maximised energy generation while working within the site’s structural and electrical constraints.
The completed installation consists of 722 JA Solar 600W solar panels, delivering a total installed capacity of 433.2 kWp. The panels are mounted using K2 Systems S-Dome 6.10 Classic and MiniRail Mk2 mounting systems, selected to suit the varying roof conditions across the site.
The system is powered by high-efficiency Solis inverters with intelligent cloud-based monitoring, allowing Zebra to track performance and maximise energy generation.
As Principal Contractor, NSI Energy coordinated every aspect of the project, including health and safety management, scaffolding, deliveries, programme scheduling, and contractor coordination to ensure minimal disruption to the site’s operations.
Following installation, the system underwent comprehensive testing in accordance with IEC 62446-1 and BS EN 50549 before being commissioned and handed over with full operational documentation, maintenance manuals, and user training.
